Notice for Thesis Defense application in Fall semester 2026

  • Degree Examination Application System: Access NCKU Degree Examination Application System (Opens in new window) (System Open: August 24, 2026, 09:00 to January 20, 2027, 23:59)
  • Degree Examination Period: September 7, 2026 to January 29, 2027
  • Deadline for Grade Submission: January 29, 2027
  • Application Deadline: Paper documents must be submitted to the Department Office at least 2–3 weeks prior to the oral defense; late submissions will not be processed. For students expecting to graduate in January, it is highly recommended to complete the application before December 31.
  • Before applying, graduate students should carefully read the Curriculum Division's Degree Examination Webpage (Opens in new window), which includes instructions for applications and modifications, Degree Examination Q&A, Online Defense Q&A, and procedures regarding natural disaster work/class suspensions.

Important Notes

  1. Identity Verification for Committee Members: Starting from the 2026 Academic Year, in accordance with university policy, off-campus committee members must provide their National ID Number (ARC/UI No. or Passport Number for international members) as a required field when submitting their information in the system for identity verification by the Personnel Office.
  2. Special Regulations for Doctoral Students:
    • Graduation preliminary review materials must be submitted at least 2 months prior to the oral defense. The defense application can only be submitted after approval by the Department Affairs Meeting. If you are unsure about your eligibility, please check with the Department Office in advance.
    • The degree oral defense can only be held 3 months after passing the Dissertation Proposal Defense.
    • Defense details must be posted on the Department bulletin board 1 week prior to the examination.
  3. Application for Embargo of Thesis/Dissertation (Delayed Public Access):
    • The application must be completed on the Degree Examination Application System before the oral defense; retroactive applications after the defense will not be accepted.
    • Print the "Application for Embargo of Thesis/Dissertation" prior to the examination, entering the requested delay duration (maximum 5 years). Attach relevant supporting documents for committee members to review and sign during the exam.
    • The signed application forms will be collected by the Department Office and submitted to the Registrar's Division along with the hard copies of the thesis/dissertation.
  4. Participation of International Scholars in Degree Examinations:
    • Complete and submit the approval form (attaching the scholar's CV and an official website profile of their institution) along with the Video-Conferencing Application Form. After obtaining the advisor's signature, submit these forms to the Department Office together with the Degree Examination Application Form.
    • For relevant regulations, please refer to the Curriculum Division / Degree Examination website.
    • Expense reimbursement must be processed by individual laboratories. Please refer to the attached guidelines for details.
    • After the defense, an "Outcome Report on the Participation of International Scholars in Degree Examinations" must be submitted to the Department Office for record-keeping.
  5. Qualification Review for Examination Committee Members:
    • If a committee member does not hold a faculty position (doctoral defense committee members must hold Associate Professor status or above), or is an industry expert, researcher, etc., their qualifications must be reviewed and approved by the Department Affairs Meeting prior to invitation. Please complete the Committee Member Qualification Application Form (Opens in new window) in advance.

Required Documents for Submission (Advisor's signature required; stamps are not accepted)

  1. Graduate Degree Examination Application Form: Please complete and print it via the Degree Examination Application System (Opens in new window).
  2. Plagiarism Check / Similarity Report Result Page (Signed by Advisor).
  3. Download BME Graduate Oral Defense Application Approval Form (PDF, Opens in new window).
  4. For students admitted in or after the 2022 academic year who plan to graduate this semester, please submit a 6-hour "Academic Ethics Education Certificate" from the Center for Taiwan Academic Research Ethics Education (Opens in new window).
  5. Please complete the BME Department Exit Questionnaire (Opens in new window) online in advance and upload your graduation photo in academic regalia at the end of the survey.
  6. When submitting your application to the Department Office, please attach a hard copy of a 2-inch graduation photo in academic regalia with your student ID and name written on the back (Exempt if previously submitted).

Remarks

  1. The absolute deadline for holding the oral defense for the Fall 2026 semester is January 29, 2027, which includes submitting grades to the Registrar's Division. Failure to submit grades on time will be considered a withdrawal from the exam, and graduation for this semester will not be possible. Therefore, the latest date to arrange an oral defense is January 29, 2027.
  2. For students graduating this semester, the deadline for completing the school-leaving procedures is before the start of the Spring 2027 semester (Latest departure date: February 19, 2027).
  3. Students wishing to apply for an online oral defense must handle it on a case-by-case basis. Please submit an application to the university and refer to the Academic Affairs Office Online Defense Guidelines (Opens in new window).
  4. Please reserve the defense room by yourself.
