A. Interdisciplinary Integration
Biomedical engineering is a practical Interdisciplinary integrative department. In addition to offering courses related to biomechanics, medical electronics, biomedical materials, medical information and basic medicine, the department also breaks the traditional barriers between schools and departments to establish an interdisciplinary credit course for medical equipment and systems. The characteristic and experiments of medical equipment creativity course enable students from various colleges who are interested in medical equipment research and development and entrepreneurship to inspire the interest and concept of medical equipment. Students in this field will explore unmet clinical needs with the clinician group, participate in industry topics posed by medical materials and biotechnology manufacturers in the Science Park, and finally link to innovative curriculum design such as BioDesign Entrepreneurship Capstone. Those courses provid training from clinical needs, prototype trial production of core technologies, the regulations and patents of medical materials, the market business model, and the innovative R&D and entrepreneurship of spin-off companies to enter the Science Park.
B. Abundan Teaching Resources
The faculty spans various disciplines, clinical medical professionals and a diverse fields of outstanding industry mentors. Based on the existing strong equipment, teachers and resources of the College of Engineering, in conjunction with the faculty, equipment and clinical resources of the medical school and hospital, students are trained to have both engineering science and biomedical training and research experience, as well as the ability to commercialize medical materials. At the same time, it can train and cultivate modern engineering technology to provide clinical specialists to solve unmet clinical needs, so that its medical treatment, diagnosis and research can reach international medical technology level.
C. Equal Emphasis on Academia and Industry
The medical equipment industry is one of the emerging industries in Taiwan. The development of the biotechnology industry in the national policy has given priority to the development of medical equipment. At the same time, the characteristic medical material industry clusters in various parts of Taiwan have gradually formed and flourished. The faculty of this department go deep into the front line of industrial development, undertake a number of off-campus industry-university cooperation R&D projects, and there are countless patents and key technologies being transferred into the industry. In addition to hiring teachers with clinical and industry expertise, the department regularly invites many successful manger in industry and academia to lead teachers and students in cross-border learning through keynote speeches and workshops. The BioDesign course and the medical equipment innovation master class further integrate the industry, medical practitioners and interdisciplinary students to conduct innovative design practice exercises, integrate commercial resources and strive to cultivate new medical materials.
D.International Exchange
In addition to encouraging and supporting students to study abroad in winter and summer vacations, the department participates in international biomedical engineering-related academic seminars and biotechnology and medical equipment exhibitions held around the world every year. Zealand, Israel, Singapore and other countries have carried out a number of international cooperative research and development programs, creating many opportunities for international exchange students. To implement the integration of learning and enhance competitiveness, the department actively encourages teachers and students in the department to form teams to participate in various competitions at home and abroad, and the results are dazzling. At the same time, the department welcomes foreign students to study. In addition to teaching in English and improving foreign language communication skills, it also creates opportunities for local students to interact and understand foreign students.
