Biomedical engineering encompasses almost all areas of engineering and can be applied to all medical and biological fields, making it a highly integrated and application-orientation field. The development of biomedical engineering plays a key role in the fields of life sciences, basic medical sciences and biotechnology. The theories, techniques and equipment developed through biomedical engineering provide a glimpse into the nature of life, and thus make a direct contribution to life and health, helping patients to receive better care, and healthy individuals to improve their quality of life.
Since 2021, NCKU has been one of the four key universities in Taiwan for (English/Chinese) bilingual education. The Department has been implementing EMI courses over the years, and its Master’s and PhD programs are offered entirely in English. With a large number of international students admitted into the Department, NCKU BME is now an English-speaking friendly environment and an international village. The Department encourages faculty and postgraduate students to collaborate with academic research institutions and industries in Taiwan and abroad in R&D projects with top-notch academic or high industrial application value, and to engage with overseas universities for student exchange programs.
Based on the professionalism of medical engineering, medical engineers oversea the quality of medical devices, along with risk control, installation, maintenance, repair, education and training, clinical trials safety and surveillance management, to assist doctors in making accurate diagnoses and treatments, thereby significantly improving the quality of medical care. The establishment of a medical engineering law and a professional licensing system will ensure that the services provided by medical engineers are legally protected. This will empower medical engineers to fully perform their professional roles and independent functions, ultimately maximizing the benefits for patient care.
Leveraging its strengths in the electronics sector, Taiwan’s medical device industry—including precision testing devices, surgical equipment, telecare, and medical treatment—has attracted significant investments from major technology manufacturers. This trend positions medical electronics as a key driver of Taiwan’s biotechnology industry and boosts the demand for skilled medical engineers. With an outstanding medical infrastructure and world-leading information and communications technology (ICT), Taiwan stands at the brink of an unparalleled opportunity through the convergence of these sectors. AI-based precision medicine is also setting the future trend for healthcare. Taiwan’s specialized medical device industry clusters are rapidly forming and flourishing nationwide. Through the establishment of the International Institute of Medical Device Innovation, the Department is advancing the commercialization, innovation, and incubation of medical devices, which will foster entrepreneurship, accelerate innovation, and enhance overall medical quality.
