The development of biomedical engineering plays a key role in life sciences, basic medical sciences, and biotechnology.
The theories, technologies, and equipment developed through biomedical engineering help us better understand the nature of life and make direct contributions to human health. They support better patient care and help improve the quality of life for healthy individuals.
Internationalization to Connect with the World
Since 2021, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) has been one of Taiwan’s four key universities for bilingual education in English and Chinese. The Department has offered English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) courses for many years, and its master’s and Ph.D. programs are offered entirely in English.
With a growing number of international students, NCKU Biomedical Engineering has become an English-friendly learning environment and an international academic community. The Department encourages faculty members and graduate students to collaborate with academic institutions and industries in Taiwan and abroad on research and development projects with strong academic value or high potential for industrial application. It also promotes student exchange programs with overseas universities.
Pushing for the Medical Engineers Law and Professional Licensing
With their professional expertise in medical engineering, medical engineers help ensure the quality and safety of medical devices. Their work includes risk control, installation, maintenance, repair, education and training, clinical trial safety, and surveillance management. These responsibilities support physicians in making accurate diagnoses and providing effective treatment, thereby improving the quality of medical care.
The establishment of a medical engineering law and a professional licensing system would ensure that the services provided by medical engineers are legally protected. Such a system would empower medical engineers to fully perform their professional roles and independent functions, ultimately maximizing the benefits for patient care.
